Author of a column published on the front page of the weekend edition newspapers draws attention to the descriptions of the tank appearing on the Internet – for some he is a “national hero” and “king”, for others he is a “Big Mac among tanks” and a “superman”, and others praise him with poetic lines such as: “You are indeed big, but still young and there has never been so much water in you before.”
The author explains the poetic ambitions of the dam's supporters by the fact that the German poet Joseph von Eichendorff was born in this area in 1788.
The reservoir saved millions of people from flooding
Plans to build the reservoir date back to 1880, but it was only in 2013 that construction works began. The area of the reservoir including the floodplain is over 26 square kilometers and is as large as half of the Starnberger See lake in Bavaria.
During the construction of the facility, 240 families had to be relocated. Currently, the reservoir has protected several million people in the Silesian, Opole and Lower Silesian voivodeships – we read in “SZ”. The investment of EUR 500 million, a quarter of which was financed by the European Union, turned out to be a good investment.
