A 41-year-old man who was charged with causing a fatal accident faces a sentence of six months to eight years in prison. In June last year, he was reversing a garbage truck in one of the housing estates in Białystok. A 94-year-old woman died. The driver defends himself by saying he didn't see her and followed the safety rules. However, the expert stated that the pedestrian did not contribute to what happened.

The tragedy occurred on June 20 last year on a residential street at ul. Bema in Białystok. A 94-year-old woman was fatally struck by a garbage truck driver who was reversing.

– A breathalyzer test showed that he was sober – said Marcin Gawryluk from the Provincial Police Headquarters in Białystok.

Expert: the vehicle was defective, but it did not contribute to the accident

The prosecutor's office sent an indictment in this case to the court. He accuses the 41-year-old driver of causing a fatal accident.

– It turned out that the vehicle was defective (including a damaged brake system and leakage of operating fluids), but according to the expert, these defects did not contribute to the accident – says Marek Winnicki, District Prosecutor of Białystok-Południe.

The garbage truck had a reversing camera

The driver faces from six months to eight years in prison.

– The garbage truck was equipped with a reversing camera. The 41-year-old pleaded not guilty. He claimed he did not see the woman on camera and had exercised appropriate caution. However, the expert stated that the pedestrian was standing with her back to the reversing vehicle and did not contribute to the accident. However, if the driver had limited ability to observe the driving area, he should ask for help from his colleagues who collected waste with him, the prosecutor emphasizes.

The case was brought to the District Court in Białystok. In the trial, the accused will answer freely. Preventive measures were imposed on him in the form of property bail and police supervision.

Statistics

Every year there are over 20,000 accidents on Polish roads road accidents. In 2023, according to unofficial data, 1,669 people died and 22,944 were injured. A year earlier, these were 1,896 and 24,743 people, respectively.

In 9 out of 10 accidents, the drivers were at fault. Young drivers aged 18-24 had the highest rate of accidents per 10,000 inhabitants. The cause of nearly 35 percent of the accidents they caused was the failure to adjust speed to traffic conditions.

After changing the regulations on pedestrian priority at crossings, withdrawing driving licenses for gross speed violations and increasing fines, the statistics of the last few years show that safety on Polish roads has improved. In 2019, there were 2,909 fatalities, almost 1,300 more than in 2023.
