“The North Atlantic Council has decided to nominate Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg,” the alliance said in a statement.

Rutte will take up his position on October 1, 2024. Then the term of office of the current NATO chief will expire, he held the position for 10 years.

Stoltenberg became NATO Secretary General in 2014. In March 2022, the Norwegian's term of office was extended after Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

Stoltenberg welcomed Rutte's election as his successor. He described the politician as “a strong leader and consensus builder”.

The nomination of the Dutch prime minister became a formality after his only rival, President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, resigned from applying for this position. As he explained, he failed to gain support.
