The health education program is intended to equip students not only with knowledge about the puberty process and human sexuality, but also with psychological skills regarding assertive behavior – said sexologist Professor Zbigniew Izdebski in “Fakty po Faktach”. According to Martyna Wyrzykowska, managing director of the Sexed.pl foundation, “sexual education arouses such great emotions because we simply do not understand it.” She emphasized that “education gives us security.”

The new subject health education – a joint venture of the ministries of national education, health and sports and tourism – is to be introduced to schools from the 2025/2026 school year in place of education for family life (Family Life Education) and is to be compulsory. The draft amendment to the regulation on framework curricula, which introduced this subject, was submitted for consultation in mid-November.

The project shows that – depending on age – health education will concern, among others, what anti-vaccine movements are and how to recognize disinformation about vaccinations, what contraceptive methods are, what the difference is between naprotechnology and in vitro and what are the threats associated with various aspects sexuality.

The new item is controversial. A protest against the introduction of this subject to schools is to be held in Warsaw on Sunday.

“The lifestyle of adults is changing, the lifestyle of young people is changing”

Health education was discussed on Saturday in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 by Professor Zbigniew Izdebski, sexologist, head of the team preparing the draft core curriculum of the new subject health education, and Martyna Wyrzykowska, managing director of the Sexed.pl foundation.

– I am aware that wherever the word sexuality appears in the slightest, it evokes many emotions in Polish reality – said Izdebski. He expressed his belief that “we have never before needed such a good health education program in Poland, broadly understood, including elements related to human sexuality.”

As he explained, “the lifestyle of adults is changing, the lifestyle of young people is changing.” – Young people have different authorities, different sources of information. The Internet is increasingly a source of information for children and young people (…) I am aware that the Internet brings a lot of good, but also poses a great threat to those who cannot use the Internet skillfully – said the sexologist.

Prof. Izdebski explained that “the health education program is intended to equip the student not only with knowledge about the puberty process and human sexuality, but also with psychological skills regarding assertive behavior.” – First of all, to help young people understand themselves, their body, how it functions, and at the same time, to be able to resist certain pressure from the environment – he added.

– Often, the decision to initiate sexual activity is not specifically hers or his. This decision is often made under the pressure of an environment where young people see on the Internet and communicate on their mobile phones what others are already doing. And that's why some people simply, in quotation marks, want to experiment, he said.

“Education gives us security”

According to Martyna Wyrzykowska, managing director of the Sexed.pl foundation, “sexual education arouses such great emotions because we simply do not understand it.” – It is often associated with the sexualization of children. And this is an argument that is often raised by opponents. I want to say very clearly that sexual education prevents sexualization. This is the only right path. It's great that this solution is available in schools, she said.

She emphasized that “education gives us security.”

Wyrzykowska mentioned the research conducted at the foundation. – We often hear that we, adults, did not learn about sexual education and somehow we live, somehow we learned everything. So, together with the IPSOS Institute, we conducted a test on sexual education knowledge. First, we asked declaratively how adult Poles assess their knowledge. 86 percent said they would get a C on such a test. And then it did the card. And only 16 percent got a four, she said.

– So not only do we not know, but we are mistakenly convinced of our knowledge and we pass it on in this way, or we do not share it at all – she added.
