A dozen or so days ago, there was a meeting between Barbara Nowacka, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Tomasz Siemoniak and Donald Tusk, where it was clearly signaled for the first time that health education would be an optional subject – said Konrad Piasecki in the “W Kuluarach” program. In Maja Wójcikowska's opinion, the way this decision was communicated “shows the political position of Barbara Nowacka” and her relations with the People's Party.

TVN24 journalists Konrad Piasecki, Artur Molęda and Maja Wójcikowska talked in the “W Kuluarach” program about relations within the government coalition in the context of health education. It is a joint venture of the ministries of national education, health, sports and tourism. The subject is to be introduced to schools from the 2025/2026 school year in place of education for family life (Family Life Education) and was to be a compulsory subject. At the end of October, the Ministry of Education published the draft core curriculum.

Last Sunday, the deputy prime minister, the head of the Ministry of National Defense and the president PSL Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz he announced that education health insurance will not be mandatory. – It will be the parents' decision. (…) Education of young people about health is necessary, but it cannot be dipped in any ideological sauce – he said. “Someone has confused the Ministry of National Defense with the Ministry of National Education again” – the Minister of Education commented on Kosiniak-Kamysz's statement Barbara Nowacka.

Shortly thereafter, on Tuesday, the Prime Minister Donald Tusk admitted that when it comes to introducing health education to schools, he is “a supporter of focusing on voluntariness rather than compulsion in such a situation.” Earlier that day, Nowacka announced on RMF FM that health education will be optional. She added that she had to “protect the school against political row.”

“When Donald Tusk said it, the tea was already over”

Konrad Piasecki reported that he heard that when Kosiniak-Kamysz spoke, he had the right to some knowledge, “although of course – as those he talked to told me – he should not publicly say what the decisions are in this matter.”

– Indeed, a dozen or so days ago there was a meeting between Barbara Nowacka, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Tomasz Siemoniak and Donald Tusk, where it was firmly signaled for the first time that it would be an optional subject. After this exchange of sharpness between Nowacka and Kosiniak-Kamysz, Donald Tusk entered the game and (…) said what he said about health education – he continued. – When Donald Tusk said this, the tea was already over – he added.

“The question is what does this say about Barbara Nowacka's political position?”

Wójcikowska noted that the Civic Coalition's candidate for president spoke similarly to Tusk Rafał Trzaskowski.

– The question is what does it say about Barbara Nowacka's political position that it is communicated in this way and, of course, what does it say about Nowacka-PSL relations – she wondered. Molęda said that “it's a bit like Minister Nowacka choosing tanks for the Polish army.”

As Wójcikowska said, the announcement of the final decision “could have taken place differently and there were also reservations about this style in the Sejm.”

She indicated that the MPs who talked to her expressed dissatisfaction because they wanted this subject to be compulsory. In this context, she mentioned Dorota Łoboda from KO and the Minister of Health Izabela Leszczyna with KO.

“Poles are very sensitive about this issue”

Piasecki argued that “it was not coalition issues, not PSL's opposition” that decided that the subject would be optional. – The decisive factor was the belief that in the presidential campaign this topic would be so distorted, presented in such a way, so airbrushed that it would be impossible to defend this health education – he pointed out.

According to him, there were fears that some would claim that “this is the sexualization of children at school.” – Poles are very sensitive about this issue, so it was decided that we should remove this topic from the times of the presidential campaign, someday we may return to compulsory education, but for now it should be declared – he added.
