Health. Endometriosis and immune diseases are related. New scientists' findings

Women suffering from endometriosis are more exposed to the development of immune diseases – according to a new study at the Oxford University. This discovery, according to scientists, can have a significant impact on the treatment of endometriosis.

The study was published in the scientific journal Human Reproduction. It was carried out in Great Britain – scientists from the University of Oxford used the UK Biobank database and looked at the compounds of endometriosis with the occurrence of 31 different immune diseases. They emphasize that the scale of the study was “unprecedented” – more than 8,000 were checked. cases of endometriosis and 64 thousand cases of immune diseases.

Endometriosis and other diseases

It turns out that women suffering from endometriosis are much more exposed to the development of various autoimmune and auton -inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, celiac disease, psoriasis or multiple sclerosis. In the case of such patients, the risk can be from 30 to even 80 percent. higher. Researchers emphasize that this is due to the fact that there are genetic connections between these diseases.

“We provided solid evidence of a relationship between endometriosis and the later risk of developing diseases, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, and we showed that this is biological background” – noted the co -author of the study prof. Krina Zondervan. According to her, these findings can be used to “search for new treatment methods that can be effective in these diseases.”

According to researchers, their results also prove that women diagnosed with endometriosis should be more closely observed in terms of the development of immune diseases.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a disease in which the uterus tissue comes out of the uterus and – like cancer – spreads to the body, overgrowing more organs, which causes huge pain and infertility. Although every tenth woman suffers from endometriosis, so far there was no system of treatment in Poland.
