The hottest period of summer is starting in Italy, with daily increases in temperature expected. The peak of the heat will occur on August 13 and 14, forecasters there.
On Sunday, eight cities, including Rome and Florence, are on the highest level of alert for heatwaves, as declared by the Ministry of Health. The weather service warns that it will get even hotter from Monday. “The temperature will rise steadily until mid-August,” said Antonio Sano of the iLMeteo.it website. It will be, he added, “a general scorching heat” across the country.
In the Italian capital, where oppressive heat has been ongoing since June, thermometers will show up to 38 degrees Celsius around August 9, and in Florence around 40 degrees Celsius.
The hottest temperature on Saturday was in the city of Reggio di Calabria in southern Italy, where the temperature reached 40.7 degrees Celsius. In Grottaglie in Puglia, 39 degrees was recorded.
