Due to the extreme heat, the Greek Ministry of Culture closed the Acropolis for several hours on Friday. Despite the temperature reaching around 40 degrees Celsius, long queues of tourists line up to the famous hill in Athens. Some of them needed help due to fainting.

Tourists could not visit the most famous monument of Athens on Friday between 12 and 5 pm. Usually the Acropolis is open during the summer from 8 am to 8 pm.

In the Greek capital, temperatures topped 40 degrees Celsius on Friday, but on the rocky hill of the Acropolis it is usually even higher. There is no respite in the shade either. In recent days, for this reason, employees of the Greek Red Cross distributed water bottles to tourists standing in queues.

Red Cross officials on Thursday said at least 20 people needed help with dizziness and nausea.

The Ministry of Culture announced that if the heat does not subside, it will also be impossible to climb the hill visited by millions of tourists every year during the hottest hours of the day.

Heatwaves in Europe

In Athens and other Greek cities, working hours in the public sector and in many private companies have been changed to avoid working in the middle of the hottest mid-day heat. Authorities are urging residents not to leave their homes.

Much of southern Europe is experiencing an extreme heatwave. In Italy, the temperature is approaching 40 degrees C, and from the weekend the heat is expected to intensify and exceed 40, and in some places, including Sardinia and Sicily, even 45 degrees C. Croatia, among others, is also facing the African heat, where on the coast A huge forest fire broke out near the city of Šibenik, burning buildings and cars.

Huge heat is coming to Poland. During the weekend, thermometers will show up to 36 degrees Celsius.
