The Pentagon on Friday announced another arms package for Ukraine. The new tranche of the arms procurement program includes, among others, Patriot and HAWK missiles and Puma drones. The package is worth over two billion dollars.

“This package demonstrates an ongoing commitment to both Ukraine’s critical capabilities in the short term and the sustained capability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to defend its territory and deter Russian aggression in the long term,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

Unlike most of the previous packages, the new batch of equipment will be purchased under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) program, and not transferred directly from US military depots. American officials have repeatedly emphasized recently that Ukraine’s top priority is air defense and stockpiles of artillery ammunition.

The list of donated weapons includes additional missiles for Patriot systems, HAWK air defense systems with missiles, 105 and 203 mm artillery shells, Puma reconnaissance drones, laser-guided missiles, and training and logistics support.

The new aid means that the value of military support promised by the Biden administration to Ukraine has already exceeded $40 billion. The value of weapons transferred since the start of a full-scale Russian invasion is 39.7 billion.
