On the way to the final triumph in the Billie Jean King Cup, the Italian team defeated, among others, the Polish team. The Italians were the clear favorites of that match, but in the decisive doubles match the Poles managed to scare them. In the final, the Italian representatives faced the sensation of the tournament – Slovakia – and demolished their opponents.
The Italians won the Davis Cup. Second triumph in a row!
The men's national team had slightly bigger problems in the Davis Cup final. The Italians fought against the Dutch for the title. The final started with a meeting between Matteo Berettini (35th ATP) and Botic van de Zandschulp (80th ATP). The Italian had no major problems with his rival. The first set was relatively even, and was decided only at the end, but in the second part of the match he managed to break his opponent at the very beginning, which determined the further course of the game. Ultimately he won 6:4, 6:2.
This result meant that the victory of Jannik Sinner (1st ATP) against Tallon Griekspoor (40th ATP) gave the Italians the title. The best tennis player in the world unexpectedly had problems in the first set – Griekspoor managed to lead it to a tie-break. In this match, the Italian was definitely better and won 7:2. In the second part of the match, he also did not give his opponent much chance and won 6:2.
Thus, the Italians won the second Davis Cup in a row. This is a huge success for the local tennis players, who had previously won this tournament only once – in 1976.
