There is no need to use third-party data, since PESEL, name and surname or date of birth allow for full identification of the identity – indicated the Office for Personal Data Protection. As written, “requiring the father's name for identification is a historical relic”.
The Office for Personal Data Protection states in a statement published on its website that the systematic resignation of the drafters from adopting provisions providing, for identification purposes, a legal basis for processing third-party data should be assessed positively.

“The supervisory authority has effectively influenced the abandonment of the practice consisting, among others, in requiring the provision of the father's name, i.e. data of a third party, for the purpose of identification. This is not appropriate, since other identifiers directly assigned to the person, such as the PESEL number, the number and series of the identity document, can be used to confirm identity” – the UODO stated in a press release.
It was pointed out that identifying a person through his or her parent's data is a relic compared to other possibilities established in the legal system over recent decades.
“Such practice is also not justified from the point of view of the principles of personal data processing, especially the principle of minimization,” it added.
