On this summer vacation, wherever you look, some politician takes part in a rally of some sort. Normally, this is not the holiday season, but the preparations for the election campaign – Barbara Sobska decided whether this should be interpreted as the increased activity of Polish parties. Material of the magazine “Polska i Świat”.
Theoretically, political holidays are just underway, but in practice it has only happened in parliamentary buildings. – Just in case, you have to be ready – says the political scientist at the University of Warsaw, Prof. Ewa Marciniak.
Politicians from all parties, after almost a year’s pandemic break, set off in Poland and since June they have been catching up in direct meetings with voters. – None of the politicians knows when the election campaign will be and when there will be elections. So what we call a permanent election campaign is just underway – adds prof. Ewa Marciniak.
Because it has been difficult to talk about a stable parliamentary majority for a long time, and nothing builds social trust more than direct meetings with people – handshakes, conversations or photos taken. Image and marketing expert Dr. Mirosław Oczkoś points out that only “connoisseurs read the party’s election program”. – Connoisseurs read the program. The longer the program, the worse it gets – he adds.
It is also difficult to convey. The prime minister first set off for Poland to promote the Polish Deal – the flagship social and political program, followed closely by the most famous PiS politicians. – In terms of image, it is impossible to enter the same river twice, or at least not in the same way – says Dr. Mirosław Oczkoś.
A tournament for social attention
For example, meetings with Rural Housewives’ Clubs have already been held, and there have also been visits to farmers. – This has worked for PiS so far, because you also need to understand them a bit. Now everyone expects concrete things and that’s what PR is always a problem when you duplicate something – adds the image and marketing expert.
For six years, voters have become used to the same style of campaigning by PiS. Political scientists emphasize that it is time to show something new. The old chairman of the Civic Platform, Donald Tusk, must also show the new policy – both to voters and party structures. Dr. Mirosław Oczkoś admits that “wherever Donald Tusk goes, there is an amazing increase”.
Not only is a tour of Poland as part of the Direction to the Future program that is to help, but also meetings of young politicians from the PO, or as part of the Women’s Summer. – Politicians take part in what can be called a tournament for social attention – says prof. Ewa Marciniak.
Summer meetings between politicians and voters
Political scientists note that not only the largest political parties have become more active in recent months. The left wing wants to show “What Poland is after the pandemic” and what can be done better in terms of women’s rights.
The Confederation has already completed its monthly campaign of meetings with voters in tourist towns. PSL politicians can most often be found at the harvest festival. – Among the smaller political players, Szymon Hołownia has to keep what can still be preserved from public support in the face of strong competition with the Civic Platform – adds prof. Ewa Marciniak.
Especially that the Polska 2050 Movement, which is fighting for greater representation in the Sejm, is aware not only of the importance of political opponents. – These will be elections in which we will decide not in four years, but in the next 20 or 30 years – believes Szymon Hołownia.
