If we want to catch agents or track down someone who actually worked for some foreign intelligence, that's what we have services for, not commissions – said Szymon Hołownia, Speaker of the Sejm, in “#BezKitu”, commenting on the idea of establishing a commission to investigate Russian and Belarusian influence in Poland.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Friday that a draft bill has been prepared to establish a commission to investigate Russian and Belarusian influence in Poland. As he pointed out, the project was prepared by the minister-coordinator of special services, Tomasz Siemoniak. According to Tusk, the proposed law will establish a “constitutional and effective” commission that will investigate Russian and Belarusian influence in Poland.

The Marshal of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia, commented on the matter in the “#BezKitu” program. – If we want to catch agents or track down someone who actually worked for some foreign intelligence service, that's what we have services for, not commissions. The committees in the Sejm do not have the same powers as the Internal Security Agency or the Military Counterintelligence Service. They work in a different way and that's why they serve in every country, he said.

However, he added, “if the Prime Minister, and I haven't talked to him about it, has an idea or a vision that something needs to be shown structurally and it can be done in the Sejm, then please.” – We just need to talk about how to do it so that it is not a simple unwind: Kaczyński was chasing us, now we are chasing Kaczyński, because it will not be any better in Poland – said Hołownia.

Talking about the case of Tomasz Szmydt, who, as a Polish judge, asked for asylum in Belarus, said that “all those who along the way did not notice that this man was taking advantage of, or had the potential to take advantage of, our very dangerous opponents” were to blame. – All those who turned a blind eye to something along the way, who, as sometimes happens in politics, said “it doesn't matter, it's ours” and moved on, all of them should be named and stigmatized today, because this man is a powerful bell for all of us alarm – said the Speaker of the Sejm.

Hołownia announces a secret session of the Sejm, but not about Szmydt

The Marshal of the Sejm was asked whether he was considering convening a secret session of the chamber regarding Szmydt. – In the case of secret sessions of the Sejm, when a secret session of the Sejm is announced, it costs us five hours to prepare the room, after all, everything has to be done there to make it super safe. There is a session of the Sejm, and then the MPs come out and tell the media in absolute secrecy what was discussed at the secret session of the Sejm – he replied.

– First of all, it's not me who wants to decide about it, but the person who provides the information. In this case, it was supposed to be the Minister of Defense. The Minister of Defense said “no, I want to say it at the Sejm committee”. There will be a closed meeting of the defense commission in the near future, during which the relevant information will be presented, he continued.

As he added, “there will definitely be a discussion in the plenary hall, because the Deputy Prime Minister has already announced such a debate or a proposal for such a debate.” However, a secret session of the Sejm will be convened anyway, on another matter. – We will have to do something about the commission on pedophilia and the application that has now been submitted to dismiss two of its members. There I gave it a restricted clause, said Hołownia.

At the end of April, Karolina Bućko, the chairwoman of the state commission on pedophilia she said that she had applied to the Speaker of the Sejm for the dismissal of two members of the commission. It was about the allegations of mobbing made against them. Hołownia on Wednesday informed that he had forwarded the application to the Committee on Justice and Human Rights. – I marked its justification as “restricted” due to the sensitivity of the data contained therein – he said.

Hołownia about running in the presidential elections and the position of Speaker of the Sejm

Hołownia was asked whether he was considering a scenario in which he would remain in the marshal's seat until the end of the Sejm term. – No, I don't think about it at all. We have a coalition agreement that binds us. It lists names, surnames, dates, and who performs what function at what time. I take what I sign seriously. However, I already know that the political situation we are in is so dynamic – the internal situation, and I'm not talking about the external situation – that it can all go wrong 15 more times – he replied.

– So I have a horizon now until the end of the year. Then, from my perspective, the Marshal of the Sejm, it would be good to conduct the presidency (Poland in the EU Council in the first half of 2025 – ed.), which will be very rich in what I also started to develop a little, i.e. parliamentary diplomacy and international contacts at the Marshal's level. the Sejm, or the parliament in general. And we'll see it later, he added.

When asked whether his participation in the presidential elections in 2025 was certain, he replied “no”. He added that he “takes every scenario into account.” – Politics, especially today in such hot times, is such a game that the variables can change, as the name suggests, several times a week. When there is time to make decisions, we look at what the variables look like, not half a year earlier or two years earlier – he added.

He said he would make a decision on this matter “after the holidays.”
