In Hong Kong, arrests were made of people who participated in commemorating the 33rd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing. Participation in this “illegal gathering” is punishable by five years’ imprisonment.

Activists of the League of Social Democrats (LSD) political party, among others, were detained in Tiananmen Square. One of them was allegedly arrested for wearing a t-shirt with a portrait of Chinese opposition Li Wangyang, who died mysteriously in 2012, wearing a mask that reads “mourn on June 4” (anniversary of the Beijing massacre).

Severe punishment

The authorities forbid

In the past, Hong Kong was the only Chinese territory where commemoration and homage to the victims of the Tiananmen massacre was tolerated. Vigil was banned in 2020-21 under anti-coronavirus laws.

On June 4, 1989, the Chinese communist regime dispatched troops and tanks to brutally suppress the protest of people peacefully demonstrating for democracy in Heavenly Peace Square.
