New ID cards are issued for a period of 10 years, so all people who either turned 18 in 2014 or replaced their ID a decade ago will have to go to the office in 2024 to apply for a new document.

As “Fakt” reported, citing data from the Ministry of Digitization, over 2.7 million Poles have ID cards that expire in 2024.

According to the daily, using an expired ID card may result in a fine of up to PLN 5,000. zloty.

How to replace your ID card?

According to information available on government websites application for an ID card we can submit it at any office, regardless of the registered address, or online. This is a free service.

There is no need to prepare a paper application when visiting the office. The official will prepare the document in the system based on data, for example, from the PESEL register.

To submit an application for an ID card online, we will need a trusted profile, a qualified electronic signature certificate or a personal signature certificate.


All ID cards issued from March 4, 2019 are e-IDs, i.e. ID cards with an electronic layer. Therefore, we always complete the application with fingerprints and a signature specimen. These data will be collected at the office and placed in your ID card. In the case of an application sent online, you have 30 days to visit the office. After this deadline, the application will not be processed (it will not be considered).

Fingerprints are stored in the Identity Card Register solely for the purpose of issuing an ID card. The prints are automatically deleted from the Register when the citizen collects the ID or if the citizen does not collect the ID within 90 days from the date of issue (i.e. the date of personalization included in the ID).

The application must also be accompanied by a color photo in electronic form with a minimum resolution of 492 x 633 pixels and a maximum size of 2.5 MB. You have to wait for a new ID within 30 days from completing the application.
