Jarosław Kaczyński wants to continue to be the head of Law and Justice. He previously said that the presidency until 2025 would be enough. Now it turns out that it is not enough, because the party – as Kaczyński says – needs to quickly go on the offensive. Prime Minister Donald Tusk briefly commented on Kaczyński’s decision: “good news.” Stanisław Tyszka, an MP from Confederation, also believes that this is a good thing for his party.

Shortly after his election in July 2021, Jarosław Kaczyński announced that he would no longer run for president of Law and Justice. However, political retirement is getting closer, because in an interview for “Sieci”, President Kaczyński assured that he has strength, a political plan and does not want to be considered a deserter.

– This is the leader of our camp and we are convinced that we will get out of this corner – comments Patryk Jaki, MEP from Sovereign Poland. – I think that this is a decision that has always been made, but it was only obscured before the next elections – says Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense.

After October 15, Law and Justice is in opposition. Three investigative commissions have been launched to hold PiS politicians accountable, and there are five weeks left until the local elections, and it was at this moment that Jarosław Kaczyński announced his decision, admitting that it was a difficult moment for the party.

“We are more united and stronger, better prepared to continue fighting than our opponents believe. Of course, this is a difficult moment. There are weaker people who react to the loss of power in a nervous, ill-considered way, there are those who may simply want to join stronger by implementing the simplest life strategy,” Kaczyński said.

Decisive leadership and a quick move to the offensive – this is supposed to save PiS in the opposition and silence those who dared to openly criticize the president. – PiS is going to the bottom under his rule. Without his rule, it would also have gone to the bottom – says Kamila Gasiuk-Pihowicz, an MP from the Civic Coalition.

“Good news”

Prime Minister Donald Tusk called Jarosław Kaczyński’s decision “good news”. – We have already heard his stories about the fact that there is no one to lose to, which is why pride comes before a fall – says Patryk Jaki, commenting on the words of the head of government. – I’m glad that Donald Tusk thinks it’s a good decision, because I also think it’s a good decision – emphasizes Jacek Sasin, Law and Justice MP. At the same time, the politician argues that nothing extraordinary is happening, and he considers the president’s decision obvious. – Changing a leader is a crisis moment, especially a leader who is so strong and bonds our environment so much – he adds.

This is how Wojciech Kolarski from the Chancellery of the President assesses President Kaczyński’s decision. – Law and Justice is President Kaczyński’s private party. President Kaczyński created it and he is more for this entire camp than the president of the party – he says.

The October 15 coalition believes that the defeat of Law and Justice is the result of what and how Jarosław Kaczyński said. – This narrative about the annihilation of Poland, the coup d’état, about German agents. President Kaczyński will not deviate from this path – believes Aleksandra Maria Leo, MP from Third Way.

Jarosław Kaczyński has just announced a turn in the election campaign and that the message of Law and Justice will be positive. – He is unable to pretend and suddenly put on the mask of a democrat. He says terrible things – comments Barbara Nowacka, Minister of Education. – Rumors about the political death of Jarosław Kaczyński and PiS are very, very exaggerated – emphasizes Marcin Horała, an MP from Law and Justice.

The Confederation is also happy

The head of President Andrzej Duda’s office, a former PiS politician and the head of several winning election campaigns, directly said that it was time for political retirement. – I haven’t changed my mind. I was asked about it in a radio program and I answered as I think, but President Kaczyński will retire when he wants, says Marcin Mastalerek.

– I am very happy about this, because I hope that it will accelerate the flow of voters from Law and Justice to the Confederation – says Stanisław Tyszka, an MP from the Confederation.

The question about the successors of President Jarosław Kaczyński also remains open. Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki spoke directly about his aspirations in January. – I would like the president to be the head of PiS for as long as possible, to unite our camp. And then I would also like to take part in this honorable race, in this competition – he confessed in an interview with Radio ZET.

President Kaczyński’s term of office ends next year. He had no opponent at the previous congress. – This is how it is in politics and I know that both Czarnek and Jaki, as well as many other young politicians, even Mr. Horała, would love to take some better positions in this party – says Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus, Deputy Minister of Culture and National Heritage .
