The number of cancer increases rapidly, whose symptoms “also accompany us in banal infections.” There is a vaccine against them, but few people use it. Professor Wojciech GolusiƄski talked about HPV vaccination against HPV.

Key facts:

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that can cause cancer.
  • Prof. Wojciech GolusiƄski talked about “banal symptoms” of this kind of cancer and said when to go to a specialist.
  • More about vaccinations against HPV W “Medical interview” on TVN24+.

Professor Wojciech GolusiƄski, a specialist in otolaryngology, head of the Clinic of Surgery, neck and ENT Oncology at the Medical University of PoznaƄ, he spoke on TVN24 on HPV vaccination, which protects against some types of cancer.

– Today we are dealing with a new, very important etiological factor in the development of cancer. This is the human papillomavirus, which belongs to oncogenic viruses, i.e. those that cause cancer – said Professor GolusiƄski.

– Human papilloma virus has been associated primarily with cervical cancer for many, many years, but today, above all, also with head and neck cancer. And in the latter group of cancers I mentioned, we have very alarming epidemiological data, because these cancers, especially in young people, below 45 years old, grow evenly – he noted.

These cancers develop very quickly

Professor Wojciech GolusiƄski pointed out that the tumors caused by HPV develop very quickly and significantly affect our lives. In addition to cervical cancer, these are tumors of the middle throat, palate, almonds, roots of the tongue.

So why do so few people use vaccinations? – I think education is needed here. Education of all of us, Polish women, Poles, education of healthcare employees, teachers, schools that should conduct such education and counteracting all anti -vaccination movements – replied prof. GolusiƄski.

– According to the ministry (health – ed.), Regulations are as follows. The availability of the vaccine is for all girls and boys between 12 and 14 years old. These vaccinations have been extended to the age of 18. And during this period they are the most effective. Later, we have so -called vaccinations capturing between 18 and 26 years, which also have very good effectiveness – said the specialist.

“The best proof that it works”

Prof. Wojciech GolusiƄski mentioned Fr. Australiawhere HPV vaccinations were introduced two decades ago. – Today, just as we are talking about cervical cancer all the time, there is a disease that rarely occurs. And there is a small incidence of head and neck cancer compared to other countries, which I have already mentioned. So this is the best proof that it works – he noted.

– I can assure you that these are very high quality vaccines, cleaned and do not actually cause any side effects, no consequences – assured the specialist.

Unusual symptoms of cancer

Professor GolusiƄski also mentioned the symptoms of head and neck cancers, which are unusual. – Symptoms that are initially that is a sore throat, some discomfort when swallowing. Often, such symptoms accompany us in such banal infections – he noted.

– If these banal symptoms are prolonged, last more than six weeks, you should take a doctor, because in the early period, when we have the first or second degree of advancement of this cancer, we are able to help (…), we are able to cure a person and only control it. However, if we have a late stage, then treatment is very difficult, often mutilating, dramatically reduces the quality of life and unfortunately the effects of this treatment are far from expectations – said prof. GolusiƄski.
