The Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, Laszlo Koever, will not display the European Union flag on its seat during Hungary's six-month presidency of the Council of the EU, the Magyar Narancs portal reported.

Hungary holds the six-month rotating presidency of the EU Council from Monday. After them, Poland will take over the presidency of the Council.

The Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, Laszlo Koever, has no intention of flying the EU flag in the parliament for the time being. The press office of the Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly announced that there is no such obligation and that the Presidency of the Council of the EU does not impose it.

Viktor Orban's government has been sharply critical of Brussels for its approach to immigration, the war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, among other issues, while the European Commission continues to block billions of euros for Budapest.

The Szekler flag hangs on the parliament building

As Magyar Narancs points out, Koever has consistently refused to hang the EU flag on the representative parliament building on the Danube for a decade. The portal also reminds us that the flag of the Székelys, a Hungarian-speaking community of around 650-700 thousand people living in the eastern part of Transylvania in Romania, flies on the building.

Fidesz politicians say the Székely flag, which has been a cause of tensions between Budapest and Bucharest, will continue to fly on the facades of Hungarian public institutions until Romania allows its free use throughout the country.
