A Pole died in a fire on a fishing boat in the port of Njardvik in Iceland, according to local media quoting the captain of the vessel. It is not known what caused the fire. The police are investigating.

The Icelandic portal mbl.is belonging to the daily “Morgunbladid” writes that after 2 am on Monday to Tuesday a fire broke out on the cutter Grimsnes GK-555. The boat moored in the harbor in Njardvik. Seven people were reportedly on board.

Captain: a crew member died, a Pole

According to the portal, one of the crew died in the fire. The captain of the cutter, Sigvaldi H√≥lmgrimsson, confirmed in an interview that he was a man from Poland who left his family in the country. “It’s just the worst that can happen. There’s nothing else to say,” the captain said. Quoted by another portal – visir.is – he specified that the man had been working for him for 10 years.

He noted that he currently does not know what caused the fire and is waiting for the police to investigate.

The police are investigating

According to mbl.is, four other crew members who were on board when the fire broke out left the cutter under their own power. Two people were rescued by the rescue services. As we read, one of them is kept in a coma in the hospital, the other also suffered severe burns.
