A volcano erupted on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland on Sunday morning. Lava threatens the evacuated city of Grindavik. The eruption was recorded by one of the passengers of a plane taking off from a nearby airport.
A passenger on board a plane departing from the Icelandic airport in the city of Kevlavik (about 20 kilometers from Grindavik) on Sunday recorded the eruption of a volcano in the southwestern part of the country.
– We went to Iceland to celebrate our anniversary and my birthday, I didn’t expect that we would watch a volcano erupt as we boarded and took off – wrote Ross McClymont, an eyewitness and author of the video, on the X platform.
They found no peace
The eruption began north of the town of Grindavik, which was evacuated for a second time on Saturday amid fears of another volcanic eruption. In recent weeks, authorities have tried to build earth and rock barriers to prevent lava from entering the city. On Sunday, however, it began to consume nearby houses.
