Ice hair – how is it created?

Fibrous ice, also called ice hair, is quite a rare phenomenon that requires several factors to form. One of them is the presence of pinkish tallow (Exidiopsis effusa) – a fungus that slows down the crystallization process of water. Columns of liquid are pushed upwards, where they meet cold air and freeze into delicate, fibrous crystals that resemble hair. For them to appear, a negative temperature in the air layer near the soil and high humidity are also necessary.

Interestingly, although this phenomenon has been known since 1918, it was only in 2015 that scientists discovered the process of its formation. Ice hairs only occur in the northern hemisphere.
