“Surveillance of Christians has begun”, “even communism did not require it” – Internet users are outraged, commenting on the letter that the housing cooperative in Mrągowo was supposed to hang in its buildings. Residents who want to receive a priest after Christmas carols are to be entered in the Cooperative Electronic Register of Catholic Families. This information actually appeared on the staircases. We explain.

In several blocks belonging to the “Metalowiec” Housing Cooperative in Mrągowo (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship), someone was supposed to hang information about a pastoral visit, i.e. the so-called carols. The announcement, allegedly authored by the cooperative, informed that “every family that does not have a cooperative ownership right to the premises (does not own a flat) from January 10, 2025 is obliged to inform SM 'Metalowiec' about the intention to host in their the priest's apartment 'after the so-called Christmas carol' (pastoral visit).

The letter then states that “information about the intention to welcome a priest into the apartment should be submitted to the headquarters of SM 'Metalowiec' in writing, by telephone or in person” at the cooperative's headquarters no later than two days before the planned pastoral visit. And further: “Provided by the tenants of the above-mentioned the information will be entered into the Cooperative Electronic Register of Catholic Families (SERRK) maintained by the National Cooperative Council (KRS)“. The last paragraph is a reminder that notifying the cooperative of the intention to receive a priest after Christmas carols is obligatory for tenants who do not have cooperative ownership rights to the premises (this sentence contains a stylistic error).

The letter is dated January 10, 2025, the signature reads only: “under the authorization of the management board of SM 'Metalowiec'” – no name and surname of a specific person – and under it is the stamp of the cooperative. The address and telephone number provided are correct.

The announcement was posted in blocks of flats in Mrągowox.com

The case first became a local topic, because the cooperative's document was reported on by local groups and Facebook pages devoted to Mrągowo matters. But a photo of this letter also found its way to social media, increasing the reach of the information. Due to the unusual content, they were published on anonymous social media accounts with large reach.

Internet users do not spare criticism towards the authorities of the cooperative from Mrągowo. “This is probably some kind of joke? Surveillance of Christians has started,” wrote one of the Facebook users, posting a photo (original spelling of the posts). “We are happy to announce that the 'Metalowiec' Housing Cooperative in Mrągowo has discovered a new frontier of absurdity and has decided to take us back to the Middle Ages, but this time with the full support of modern bureaucracy. (…) To accept the priest, residents who do not have cooperative ownership rights , they must report it to the Cooperative Electronic Register of Catholic Families (SERRK), as if it were some holy investigation into the sanctity of your apartment,” it was written on another Facebook page. “Meanwhile in Mrągowo…” – the website demotywatory.pl described the document. “This is probably some kind of joke,” commented one of the website X users. This entry was viewed over 25,000 times. people, and comments included, among others: that: “Even communism didn't require it”; “These are probably the last acts of desperation before the POPiS ship sinks.”

However, some Internet users pointed out that it was probably a fake and should be checked. That's what we did.

“Someone scanned the stamps and forged the letter.” The case is in the prosecutor's office

We contacted the “Metalowiec” Housing Cooperative in Mrągowo. In an interview with Konkret24, Agnieszka Wojciechowska from the cooperative's management board says that they know the matter – indeed, such notices were posted in several blocks of flats, but the cooperative was not their author. Explains:

Someone scanned the stamps, forged the letter and hung it in several stairwells in the estate.

The vice-president of the cooperative's management board informs that the cooperative's employees have already taken down the advertisements and reported the matter to the prosecutor's office. – Together with our legal advisor, we have been working on this issue since Saturday, when these announcements appeared on social media – explains Agnieszka Wojciechowska. He emphasizes that the content of the false announcement affects not only the Mrągowo cooperative, but also the Church.

There are clues in the document itself that it is a fake. For example, the name and surname of the author of the information are missing or there is an error in the last paragraph. The name of the Cooperative Electronic Register of Catholic Families is mentioned, which is allegedly run by the National Cooperative Council (KRS) – but although the National Council of the Judiciary actually exists, we have not found any information about the existence of the Cooperative Electronic Register of Catholic Families. We asked the National Cooperative Council for a comment, but we had not received a response by the time the article was published.
