IMGW alerts. The amount of water in rivers can increase dramatically

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued hydrological alerts for the south of Poland. After the storms and rainfall forecast for today, a sharp increase in the water level in rivers is possible, which may result in exceeding the warning levels. Localized flooding may occur.

IMGW hydrological alerts

First degree alarms apply throughout the provinces Lesser Poland and Subcarpathianand partly in the following voivodships: Silesian, Opole, Lower Silesia, Lublin and Świętokrzyskie.

As it was written in the release, “in the areas of forecasted storm precipitation, on smaller rivers and in urbanized catchments, rapid increases in water levels may occur. In controlled catchments, in the event of particularly intense rainfall, there is a possibility of exceeding the warning levels”.

IMGW emphasized that the warnings were issued “in connection with the forecasted storm precipitation that occurs locally. Due to its nature, intense, point precipitation in the place of its occurrence may cause a potential hydrological threat from smaller rivers, as well as local flooding (mainly in urban areas)”.

Alerts will be valid until 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Little water in the rivers

As IMGW informed in social media, currently “low and medium water levels remain on rivers in Poland”.

“The decreases and stabilization of water levels continue. Local increases in the last 24 hours occurred in places of more intense rainfall or as a result of the operation of hydrotechnical devices” – we read.

What is a first stage hydrological alarm

The first degree of hydrological alert means a moderate threat. Water levels (observed or forecasted) are in the zone below the warning levels – with a rapid increase in the water level expected.
