Russia and Belarus bring them in and even give them the tools to breach the barrier. Migrants are still coming. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the strengthening of the border infrastructure with Russia and Belarus for PLN 10 billion. Shield East is primarily about advanced monitoring systems, modernization of transport infrastructure and construction of warehouses, as well as the collection of materials and engineering equipment.

The fence, over five meters high, makes it much more difficult to cross the border illegally, but it can be breached – for example, by using a car jack to open the poles. One such attempt was recorded.

– This barrier is being bent, cut, and overcome. Various tools are used, provided by the Belarusian services, said Major Katarzyna Zdanowicz from the Podlaskie Branch of the Border Guard.

Since the beginning of the year, the Border Guard has thwarted almost 14,000 attempts to illegally cross the border in Podlasie. The Ministry of Interior and Administration plans to modify border security. Scientists from the Silesian University of Technology are working on solutions.

Tusk: we will build a very modern infrastructure

– We will strengthen the existing physical barrier and at the same time we will strengthen the electronic system that is on this border. We will build a road along the border so that our services can move more efficiently and effectively, announced Czesław Mroczek, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, PO MP.

However, Poland must take into account a much more serious threat than the migration pressure created by the regimes in Minsk and Moscow. That is why the government is preparing a national defense and deterrence plan.

– We will build a very modern infrastructure. A modern one that will effectively prevent the risks coming from the eastern side – announced Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Strengthening the eastern border will cost PLN 10 billion.

– If we understand fortification as building a kind of Maginot Line, for example, then this is obviously not the direction, but let's remember that we are in the 21st century – said Mirosław Różański, a member of the Senate National Defense Committee and the Third Way Senate Club.

Therefore, the Eastern Shield, covering 400 kilometers of the border with Russia and Belarus, is primarily about advanced monitoring systems, modernization of transport infrastructure and the construction of warehouses, as well as the collection of materials and engineering equipment.

Environmentalists have reasons to be satisfied

– All this will be further strengthened by anti-aircraft, anti-missile, airspace defense and, of course, satellite reconnaissance, radar and other systems – said General Mieczysław Bieniek, former deputy strategic commander of NATO.

There is something else: a gift from nature that the military intends to use to the satisfaction of nature conservationists. – Dense forests full of fallen trees, swamps, spreading rivers and so on – these are elements that are very difficult to cross, even for armored troops – explained naturalist and journalist of “Gazeta Wyborcza” Adam Wajrak.

The issue of the East Shield is to be regulated by a special act. – If actions are taken to specifically strengthen the Polish border, either with Belarus or imperial Russia, we will certainly refer to it. So far, there are no specifics, said Marcin Przydacz, an MP from Law and Justice.

– Today I am inviting you to the General Staff of the Polish Army on Monday. Together with the Chief of Staff, General Kukuła, and Minister Szymczyk, we will have an entire presentation on the Shield East project – announced the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

The Polish system is to be connected to similar fortifications in the Baltic countries.
