IMWM alerts. Watch out for black ice. Orange warnings

In the northern and north-eastern parts of the country, alerts from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management are in force due to freezing precipitation that may cause black ice. In the southern reaches of Poland, IMWM warns against snowmelt.

Forecasters from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMWM) issued first and second degree warnings.

IMWM alerts – freezing precipitation

Level 2 warnings for freezing precipitation have been issued in the province Pomeranian, in the following counties: Lębork, Wejherowo, Kartuzy, Kościerzyna, Gdańsk. Light freezing rain or drizzle causing black ice is forecast. The alerts will be valid until 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Most of Poland is subject to first, lower level warnings due to freezing precipitation. They were issued for the following voivodeships:

  • Pomeranianfor poviats: Puck, Gdynia, Sopot, Gdańsk, Nowy Dwór, where they will be valid until 8 on Saturday;
  • Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship (except southwestern counties), where they will expire at 8am-3pm on Saturday;
  • Masovian Voivodeshipfor the following counties: Przasnysz, Makowski, Ostrołęka, Ostrołęka, Ostrowski, where they will be valid until 8 on Saturday;
  • Podlasie, where they will expire at 8am-3pm on Saturday.

IMWM alerts – snowmelt

In the south of the country, due to the increase in temperature, a thaw and melting of the remaining snow cover are expected. Second level alerts apply in the following voivodeships:

  • Lower Silesiain the Karkonosze poviats and Jelenia Góra;
  • Lesser Polandin the Tatra district;
  • Podkarpackiein the Bieszczady and Lesko counties;
  • Silesianin the following counties: Żywiec, Cieszyn, Bielsko, Bielsko-Biala.

In Lower Silesia, the warnings will expire on Monday at 18, in Silesia in Małopolska they will be valid until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, and in the Podkarpacie region they will remain in force until Wednesday, also until 18.

First degree warnings due to snowmelt are in force in the province. Lesser Poland, in the following counties: Nowy Targ, Sucha, Myślenice, Nowy Sącz, Limanowski. Alerts will be valid there until 18 on Monday…

What is the second degree IMWM meteorological warning?

The second level warning predicts the occurrence of dangerous meteorological phenomena causing significant material losses and a threat to health and life. Dangerous phenomena or the effects of their occurrence significantly limit business activity. Expect disruptions to your daily functioning. Great caution is recommended, it is necessary to monitor the weather forecasts and developments. Follow all recommendations issued by emergency services in the event of an emergency. Adjust your plans to weather conditions.

What is the IMWM first degree meteorological warning?

The first level warning provides for conditions conducive to the occurrence of dangerous meteorological phenomena that may cause material losses and pose a threat to health and life. Conducting business in conditions of exposure to these factors is difficult and dangerous. Expect difficulties resulting from carrying out activities in the hazardous area, including delays caused by traffic disruptions, disruptions to outdoor events or the possibility of their cancellation.
