The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management warns about heavy snowfall in the east and north-east of Poland. For a small part of the country, IMWM issued the highest level alerts due to the expected increase in temperature and thaw.
Forecasters from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued first- and third-degree warnings on a three-level increasing scale.
IMWM alerts – heavy snowfall
IMWM warns about heavy snowfall in several regions. First level warnings have been issued for the following voivodeships:
- Warmian-Masurian Voivodeshipoutside the following counties: Braniewo, Elbląg, ElblągOstróda, Iława, Nowe Miasto, Działdowo;
- Podlasieoutside the following poviats: Suwałki, SuwałkiSejny, Augustów, Sokółka;
- Masovian Voivodeshipfor the following counties: Przasnysz, Makowski, Ostrołęka, OstrołękaOstrowski, Wyszków, Wołomin, Mińsk, Węgrowski, Sokołów, Siedlce, Siedlce, Łosicki;
- Lublin Provincefor the following counties: Łukowski, Biała Podlaska, Biała PodlaskaRadzyński, Lubartów, Parczew, Włodawa, Łęczyński, Chełm, Chełm, Hrubieszów.
Precipitation is forecast, causing the snow cover to increase by 10-15 centimeters in some places. Warnings in Warmia and Masuria, Podlasie and in the northern part of Mazovia will be valid until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, while in other places they will expire at 16 on the same day.
IMWM alerts – snowmelt
The highest level of warnings due to snowmelt were issued in the province. Lower Silesiain the Karkonosze counties and Jelenia Góra.
According to IMWM, the increase in air temperature will cause thaw and melting of the snow cover there. The minimum temperature will be from 2 to 5 degrees Celsius, the maximum thermometers will show 5-8 degrees Celsius. The total rainfall will reach from 20 to 30 liters per square meter, and the wind is expected to blow at an average speed of 20 to 25 kilometers per hour, in gusts up to 60 km/h, from the south and southwest.
The alerts will be effective from 1 p.m. on Tuesday until 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
What is the IMWM first degree meteorological warning?
The first level warning provides for conditions conducive to the occurrence of dangerous meteorological phenomena that may cause material losses and pose a threat to health and life. Conducting business in conditions of exposure to these factors is difficult and dangerous. Expect difficulties resulting from carrying out activities in the hazardous area, including delays caused by traffic disruptions, disruptions to outdoor events or the possibility of their cancellation. Caution is recommended, the need to follow messages and developments in the weather situation.
What is the IMWM third degree meteorological warning?
The third degree meteorological warning predicts the occurrence of dangerous meteorological phenomena causing very large or catastrophic damage over a large area and threatening life. Dangerous phenomena will make it impossible to conduct business. Extreme caution is recommended, frequent monitoring of weather forecasts and developments is necessary.
