A debate on the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border took place in the European Parliament. The leader of the EPP group, Manfred Weber, assessed that “this is not a migration crisis, but a hybrid attack on the European Union”. He assessed that “Lithuania and Latvia showed how to treat migrants” in a humane and responsible manner. “This is not the case in Poland,” he said. MEP Róża Thun appealed for further sanctions against Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime, and MEP Joachim Brudziński recognized that that this debate “once again served (…) as a pretext to attack” the Polish government.

On Wednesday, the European Parliament held a debate on “Escalation of the humanitarian crisis on the EU-Belarus border, especially in Poland”. The EP leadership decided to change the agenda accordingly. The debate on the border crisis replaced the previously planned session summing up the European Union summit.

Weber: Lithuania and Latvia showed how to treat migrants in a humanitarian way

Josep Borrell, the head of EU diplomacy, said that “it is clear that the Belarusian authorities are using people as a tool to achieve political goals.” “They gave them false hopes and expectations and put them in an extremely difficult situation,” he added.

The leader of the European People’s Party, Manfred Weber, said that “no one wants to build walls and fences, but if there is technically no other way to protect our borders, then investment in physical barriers must also be possible.”

– As the EPP, we are in favor of making EU funds available for the construction of this type of infrastructure in exceptional circumstances, he said.

In his opinion, “this is not a migration crisis, but a hybrid attack on the European Union”. – The dictator Lukashenka first fought against the democratic opposition in his own country and imprisoned people. We have launched the sanctions and are now putting pressure on the European Union. This is (his – ed.) Business model. The oligarchic system in Belarus works just like that – assessed the German politician.

– We will protect our borders. Smugglers and dictators will not decide who enters us – he declared. At the same time, it made a reservation that the “dignity and rights of migrants” must not be violated in the protection of borders.

– Lithuania and Latvia have shown how to treat these people in a humane and responsible manner. This is not the case in Poland. The Polish authorities do not currently accept Frontex support. We are not transparent about what is happening at the border, pointed out Weber.

Manfred Weber: this is a hybrid war, you cannot blackmail the European Unionebs

Iratxe Garcia Perez of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats: assessed that the European Union cannot remain passive in the face of the drama of migrants. – We cannot be united in impotence, we cannot afford it – he argued.

Thun: we must stop Lukashenka’s madness all together

MEP Róża Thun from the Renew Europe group stated that what is happening on the Polish-Belarusian border “is a matter for the entire European Union”. – Only together, together with the EU, can we solve this problem, she assessed.

She also made a reservation that “we cannot live in a world where security rules out humanity.” – People are dying on the eastern border of the European Union. We must stop Lukashenka’s madness together, we need more sanctions, she argued.

According to her, “dictators (…) understand only the language of power, authority and money.” – So let’s impose sanctions on those responsible for this situation, but also let’s hit the economic interests of the regime – she said.

Brudziński: This extremely important debate once again served as a pretext to attack the government

Law and Justice MEP Joachim Brudziński said that “it is regrettable to note that this extremely important debate from the point of view of the security of citizens of the entire European Union has once again served, at least in the speeches of some of you, as a pretext to attack the government (Poland – ed.)”.

– With great regret I note that the head of the largest faction in the European Parliament, Mr. Manfred Weber, is attacking the Polish government once again – he continued.

Brudziński: you have to stand behind the Polish Border Guard

Brudziński: you have to stand behind the Polish Border Guardebs

– As a left-wing majority, you voted today that we will discuss the humanitarian situation on the Polish-Belarusian border. You once voted that a snail is a fish, and a carrot is a fruit. You can vote that there is no gender, mom is dad and dad is mom, but what does this have to do with common sense? – He was asking. According to him, “this situation, which affects the entire European Union today, is a hybrid war waged by the criminal regime of Lukashenka and his protector from Moscow against the security of the entire EU.”

He also warned that if Europe continues to send signals to the people of the Sahel and the Middle East about its openness, we will have a repeat of the 2015 migration crisis. – All those who say from this podium that we should open the borders, take care of these unfortunates, are actually fueling the money for those who organize smuggling (migrants – ed.). Today, the revenues from the organization of illegal immigration are greater than the revenues from the arms or drug trafficking, said Brudziński.

UN representative: The European Union should and can do better

Even before the debate in the European Parliament, Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), made an appearance.

As he assessed, the challenges of the migration crisis “do not justify the reflexive reaction we have seen in some places – irresponsible xenophobic discourse, walls and barbed wire, violent push backs that include beating refugees and migrants.”

– The European Union, a Union based on the rule of law, should and can do better, and in matters of the rule of law it can still be an example for others – he added.
