At least 35 people have died when the lid of a disused well at a temple in the Indian city of Indore collapsed, news agencies reported.

The tragedy occurred in the state of Madhya Pradesh (central India), during the celebration of the Hindu festival in honor of the god Rama, PAP informs. The agency cites witnesses that a crowd of devotees gathered at the temple to perform a fire ritual. At that time, the structure covering the approximately 6-metre-long opening of an unused well with a depth of approx. 12 meters collapsed. People who fell into the muddy water were covered with rubble.

About 140 soldiers and service officers were involved in the operation, who first pumped water out of the well, and then pulled the bodies out of it using ladders and ropes. “So far we have pulled out 35 bodies, the rescue operation is ongoing” – said Ilayaraja T., a representative of the local authorities, quoted by PAP on Friday. It is known that at least 18 people were rescued and taken to hospitals. The Times of India reported at approx. 9:00 am Polish time that the number of victims has increased to 36.

Videos of the action have been posted on social media.

Local authorities have already announced an investigation into the matter. According to Indian media, they were to order the removal of the well cover in January, because the structure – slabs laid on an iron grille – did not meet construction requirements, threatening temple visitors. According to the Times of India, the temple administration was even given a week’s notice to dismantle the structure. However, the warning was to be ignored.
