Cyclone Dana hit the coast of India on the night from Thursday to Fridaybringing wind gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour. The India Meteorological Department said after disembarkation storm began to weaken but was still deadly dangerous, with the highest level warnings for extreme downpours issued in the states of Orissa and West Bengal.

Closed airports, suspended connections

Before the cyclone hit land, authorities in both states evacuated residents of the threatened areas to a safe place. Temporary aid centers, equipped with supplies of water, food and medicine, received a total of over a million people in Orissa alone and 300,000 in West Bengal. Advanced pregnant women were transported to hospitals.

– No one died in Orissa in Cyclone Dana, the zero casualty mission has been completed successfully, said Orissa Prime Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Difficult weather conditions caused difficulties in land and air traffic. Airports in the capitals of both regions, Kolkata and Bhubaneswar, were closed throughout the night – flights resumed only on Friday morning. Hundreds of train and bus connections were also suspended, without always informing passengers. Thousands of people had to spend the night at stations.
