At least several people are dead and dozens injured and trapped after a huge advertising billboard toppled in Mumbai, India on Monday. A rescue operation is underway.

A billboard on a busy road in Ghatkopar, in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai, collapsed during storm sand, accompanied by strong winds. The structure collapsed on several buildings and a gas station.

Indian media reported that at least eight people were killed, 60 injured and 20 to 30 people trapped under the billboard. Reuters reported over 40 people imprisoned. A rescue operation is underway.

The video published on social media by NDTV shows a large billboard falling to the ground. Several cars parked at the gas station were damaged, and metal elements of the billboard penetrated their roofs.

According to a message posted on Platform X by the Mumbai Police, the billboard measured 70 by 50 meters. As the “India Today” newspaper wrote, this billboard “last year was recognized as the largest of its kind in the country.”

Downpours and sandstorms in Mumbai

Mumbai and surrounding areas have been hit by heavy downpours and dust storms since Thursday. Trees were uprooted in some places, there were short power outages and disruptions to trains and flights at the city's international airport.
