For the third day in a row, heavy smog persisted over the Indian capital. The air quality was worsened by fireworks fired during the Hindu festival of Diwali, which ended on Saturday, and the burning of fields by farmers.

In the Indian capital on Sunday, the concentration of harmful dusts was six to seven times higher than the maximum limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to NDTV, the worst situation was in Gurugram, an airport located in the southwestern suburbs of New Delhi.

– People with lung diseases such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), asthma, heart problems suffer from shortness of breath, cough, chest discomfort. Many of them need urgent medical attention, said Rommel Tickoo, an internal medicine expert.

Environment Minister Gopala Raia said at a press conference on Saturday that New Delhi would “suffocate” if it did not stop burning the fields. “The data show that air pollution levels in New Delhi are increasing at an alarming rate due to stubble burning, and the setting off of fireworks during Diwali has only made things worse,” he explained. The regional authorities ordered the work to be stopped at 90 construction sites and sent 114 cisterns to spray the road. Recently, 3-4,000 incidents of burned fields have been reported in the neighboring states of Punjab and Hariana in connection with the Diwali celebrations.
