Heavy rainfall in Sri Lanka and southern India has led to flash floods and landslides. In the first country, at least 25 people were killed. Thousands of people had to leave their homes.
There has been heavy rainfall in Sri Lanka for over a week. On Wednesday, officials said that at least 25 people lost their lives as a result of floods and mudslides. Most of the deaths resulted from drowning. At least one person is missing.
More than 5,000 people have had to abandon their homes and find refuge in government centers or with relatives. Authorities run more than 150 relief centers where support is provided to evacuees.
In the streets of major cities such as Colombo and Puttalam, cars struggled to get through the standing water.
Fatalities and damaged homes in India
It also rains in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which led to the flooding. As reported on Tuesday, at least five people were killed there.
According to official information, more than 500 houses were destroyed by rain by Tuesday.
In Chennai, the state capital, the rain calmed down on Tuesday morning and the water began to subside. Hundreds of residents still have to deal with the water that has penetrated their homes.
