India and Sri Lanka have experienced exceptionally heavy rains in recent days. There have been floods in many regions as well as landslides. There are fatalities.

At least five people have died as a result of the flood that followed many days of unusually heavy rainfall in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Floods also appeared in Sri Lanka – there, 12 people lost their lives due to the weather.

The death toll was struck by lightning or crushed by collapsed buildings, according to the Indian minister for disaster management. According to official information, by Tuesday, rain had destroyed more than 500 houses made of mud and thatch, as well as four brick buildings.

In Chennai, the state capital, the rain calmed down on Tuesday morning and the flood began to subside. Hundreds of residents still have to deal with the water that has penetrated their homes.

There is a red weather alert in the capital until Thursday. Rain is still projected in the coming days, ranging from light to moderate. Weather forecasters also reported that it may rain harder locally.

It was raining heavily in Sri Lanka as well. According to the local crisis management agency, 12 people have died. Among the victims is a 12-year-old girl whose home was damaged as a result of a landslide.

In the streets of major cities such as Colombo and Puttalam, cars struggled to get through the standing water.

The Meteorological Department said on Tuesday that the rain may subside within the next two days. As it was added – all residents should remain vigilant, however.

“We can also expect strong winds and lightning strikes,” said department director general Athula Karunanayake.
