Ten men in India have been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a 12-hour lynching that led to the death of Muslim Tabrez Ansari. The victim’s wife has announced that she will appeal the sentence, which she believes is too lenient.

On Wednesday, a court in the city of Saraikela in the eastern state of Jharkhand India sentenced 10 men to 10 years in prison for lynching a Muslim. In 2019, Tabrez Ansari was tied to a pole by his captors who accused him of burglary, then tortured for 12 hours and forced to chant the words “Jai Shri Ram”, which means “Glory to Lord Rama” – a kind of greeting, which is used by Orthodox Hindus and Hindu nationalist organizations.

After the lynching, the 24-year-old was handed over to the police in critical condition. He died four days later in custody from his wounds. However, a video leaked to social media showing a man being tortured as he cries and pleads with the crowd for mercy. Following public outrage, the police arrested 12 Hindus, two of whom were later acquitted due to lack of evidence. The others were sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined 15,000 zlotys. Indian rupees (approx. PLN 748), finding them guilty of murder.

The Prime Minister of India commented on the crime

Tabrez Ansari’s wife has said she will appeal the sentence, which she believes is too lenient. “I respect the court’s ruling, but I’m not completely satisfied. We will appeal to the higher courts for justice,” she told AFP.

The Guardian points out that the nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is regularly accused of turning a blind eye to the growing number of attacks against the Muslim minority. According to the organizations involved human rights Hindus who commit them have been encouraged to do so by the Bharatiya Janata party that came to power in India in 2014. Prime Minister Modi said he was “saddened” by Ansari’s death.
