The Chandrayaan-3 Vikram lander may have recorded the moonquake. According to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), the data he collected included an event that could have been an earthquake on the Moon. This information is intended to allow us to better understand our natural satellite.

India’s Chandrayaan-3 Vikram rover has landed near the south pole of the moon at the end of August. The main goal of the mission is to determine whether there are any frozen water resources in this region of our natural satellite. For this purpose, the device collects a whole range of information, including data on the Moon’s seismic activity.

Suspected earthquake

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) recently released data collected by the ILSA seismic instrument. It records ground vibrations generated by natural and artificial sources – movements of measuring instruments, impacts on the lunar surface and other phenomena. On August 26, he managed to record one “seemingly natural event.”

As explained by ISRO officials, the source of the vibrations is currently being investigated. However, it is possible that it was a moonquake. If true, this will be the first data on this phenomenon that we have collected since the 1970s and the Apollo missions.

Cool interior

Information gathered from a potential moonquake could help us solve the secrets hidden inside our natural satellite. Unlike many satellites of the planets of the Solar System, it is not a uniform piece of rock.

Research has shown that it most likely has a metallic core with a structure similar to that of Earth, but cold and mostly frozen. The cooled interior means that, unlike Earth, the Moon currently does not have a strong magnetic field – it is produced by the movement of metals in the molten cores of the planets.
