A five -person gang, which until 2023 killed 26 Javanese rhinos in the Indonesian Natural Park, was punished. The court sentenced the boss of Szajka to 12 years imprisonment, and his helpers – to 11 years. They are also to pay a fine. These are the greatest possible penalties for poaching, which is provided for in Indonesian law.

The French AFP press agency said that six poachers who confessed to kill 26 critically threatened with extinction of Java rhinos (Rhinoceros Sondaicus), heard sentences.

They worked five years

The court in the Indonesian province of Banten sentenced the head of the gang to 12 years imprisonment, and five of his partners to 11 years. Poachers are also to pay penalties of 100 million Indonesian rupees (over PLN 24,000). If they don't, they will spend an additional three months in prison.

The gang pleaded to operate in the Ujung Kulon National Park for five years, until 2023. 26 rhinos fell their victim.

According to the Monhabay portal, a broker working with poachers testified that for each corner of rhino Gang received from 200 to 525 million rupees (about PLN 45-130 thousand).

The population is very small

The Indonesian authorities estimate that the population of Javanese rhinos today has only 82 individuals. Once thousands of animals of this species lived in Southeast Asia. However, the species stood in the face of extinction due to poaching and loss of natural habitats, managed by man.

Park Ujung Kulon is the last place where these rhinos live in a natural environment. The corner of these animals is valued as a component of the specifics of traditional Chinese medicine.
