Already 91 percent of Poles save on food purchases. According to a study commissioned by BIG InfoMonitor, Poles most often give up buying alcohol, ready meals and sweets. Despite this, a very large percentage of respondents lose money due to food waste.
As indicated by the authors of the BIG InfoMonitor study, more rational management of finances spent on food has a positive impact on the diet of Poles, because – if we give up some products – they are usually the most unhealthy ones.
More than half of the respondents declare that they limit the consumption of alcohol (52%), prepared meals from the store (47%) and sweets (43%). In the case of basic food products, such as meat, cold cuts, fruit, vegetables, bread and dairy products, a reduction in purchases is declared by 4% of respondents. up to 14 percent surveyed.
Poles give up some products
According to the main analyst of BIG InfoMonitor prof. Waldemar Rogowski, reducing spending on certain items can have a positive impact on our health. – As many as 26 percent of respondents said they improved their eating habits. This is definitely more answers than indicating a deterioration in the quality of nutrition (17 percent) – he pointed out, commenting on the results of the study.
According to the study, 70 percent of people who prepare their own meals pays attention to their quality. – In everyday life, preparing meals at home is declared by a total of 91% of respondents. Poles, the vast majority of whom do it consciously, which proves the increase in knowledge in the field of nutrition – added Rogowski.
As part of the savings, we eat out less often or choose the so-called box diet. The use of catering facilities (restaurants, fast food, milk bars) is indicated by 3% of respondents as the dominant way of eating. respondents. In turn, dietary catering chooses 2 percent. surveyed.
Despite the high prices, food is still wasted
Diana Borowiecka from BIG InfoMonitor pointed out that the increase in food prices makes it necessary to monitor expenditure more closely. According to the survey, 42 percent of respondents follow the newspapers of retail chains to buy food products at an attractive price, and 32 percent. shop only in cheaper supermarkets and discount stores. – We also try to waste less – noted Diana Borowiecka from BIG InfoMonitor and pointed out that 36 percent. of respondents cook so that the dish lasts longer than a day, and 24 percent. buys less food. The expert cited data from the report of the Institute of Environmental Protection, National Research Institute, which shows that 3 million tons of food are wasted in Poland at the consumption stage, which accounts for 60 percent of the food consumed. all losses.
Although 54 percent of respondents declare that they do not waste food, as shown by the results of the BIG InfoMonitor survey – 46 percent. he loses money because of it. Due to throwing away uneaten products, compatriots lose about PLN 100 per month (33%). Residents of rural areas (40%) waste food significantly less often than residents of cities (49%). Care for the contents of the refrigerator increases with the age of the respondents: from 44 percent to in the group under 45, by 60 percent. in the 45-64 age group, 72% each. among people 65 plus.
As BIG InfoMonitor experts pointed out, although inflation decreases, the relatively high price of food products makes us lose more and more on food waste. – According to data from UCE Research and the WSB Merito university, in May by 39.9 percent. vegetable prices increased by 31.9 percent. animal feed, 25.5 percent food additives, fish rose by 22.5 percent, and beverages by 21.4 percent. Although the growth rate is declining, prices are not falling, Borowiecka noted.
The debt of Poles
Rogowski pointed out that the problem is also “the still insufficient increase in wages in relation to rising food prices and the growing overdue debt of Poles”.
According to the data collected in the BIG InfoMonitor Register of Debtors and the BIK credit information database, at the end of April this year. 2.7 million people had over PLN 80 billion in overdue liabilities. During the year, the value of unpaid debts increased by PLN 4.2 billion, and the number of unreliable debtors increased by over 3.7 thousand.
The Quality Watch study on food expenditure and food waste was carried out for BIG InfoMonitor, using the CAWI method, on a sample of 1054 people, on March 24-28, 2023.
