Inflation in Poland. Shops – most of the respondents limit their purchases due to rising prices

Inflation in Poland has been the highest in over 20 years. Nearly 70 percent of respondents limit purchases due to high prices, according to the latest survey conducted by Uce Research and Syno Poland. Poles save on clothes, alcohol and sweets.

The survey was conducted using the CAWI method, i.e. by receiving the questionnaire via the Internet and filling it in online, on a sample of 1,057 adult Poles. It was ensured that the sample was selected in terms of gender, age, city size, earnings, education and region.

The survey shows that 67.9 percent. Poles surveyed reduce their spending in stores due to inflation. Every fifth question asked does not apply spending limits.

The Central Statistical Office reported this week that the consumer price index (CPI index) in October was 6.8 percent year on year. In monthly terms, prices increased by 1.1 percent. This is a level not seen since May 2001, when inflation was 6.9 percent year on year.

According to the co-author of the study from the Blix Group, Krzysztof Łuczak, people aged 56-80 years old save the most on shopping, and consumers aged 18-22 years old save the least. – This proves that the oldest consumers feel the high prices in stores the most and most often react to the situation, he assessed.

He added that the results of the survey clearly show that the current economic situation is a major problem for consumers. – Many previous polls from the last year show that the percentage of Poles who save was slightly lower than the above-mentioned one. The earnings of my countrymen do not grow as fast as the prices in stores, so the natural reaction is to cut expenses – said Łuczak.

The study shows that the biggest savings were made by the inhabitants of the following voivodeships: Podkarpackie, Wielkopolskie and Śląskie. In addition, people from cities with at least 500,000 inhabitants are the most limiting. population and towns with 5-19 thousand residents. – This means that not only Poles living in the least affluent parts of the country tighten their belts, because in large agglomerations people earn more – noted Krzysztof Łuczak.

The study also shows that the reduction in purchasing expenses mainly applies to clothing, alcoholic beverages, as well as sweets and snacks. At the end of the list are: coffee and tea, soft drinks and household chemicals. – It follows that Poles limit what is not their first need – noted Łuczak.

As he reported, the youngest (18-22 years old) and the oldest consumers (56-80 years old), living in towns of 5-19 thousand, from the provinces of Świętokrzyskie, Opolskie and Podlaskie, most often save on clothing purchases. These two age groups of respondents also save the most on sweets and snacks.

He added that spending cuts on alcohol purchases are mainly declared by Poles aged 36-55, from cities over 200,000. inhabitants and mainly from the voivodships: Zachodniopomorskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie.

– The problem of rising inflation and high prices will affect not only consumers, but also the retail industry and the economy itself – assessed Łuczak. In his opinion, this problem will only get worse. – Retail chains, seeing lower sales, will gradually introduce increases to compensate for their losses – he said.
