Doctors recommend that you get your COVID-19 and flu vaccinations at once. The latter makes itself felt. In September alone, almost 370,000 cases of flu and suspected flu were registered in Poland. This is almost twice as much as a year ago. There are also more flu vaccines, but this does not mean that they are always available immediately. Material of the magazine “Polska i Świat”.
It’s easy to catch a cold in the fall season. – We have been seeing an increase in infections and respiratory tract infections for some month now – says Agata Dobrosławska, a general practitioner. The flu also begins – in September alone, almost 370,000 cases of flu or suspected cases of flu were recorded in our country. This is almost twice as much as in the same period last year. – This year, in September, a large number of patients unexpectedly reached pharmacies – admits Marek Konstanty, president of the Silesian Pharmacy Chamber.
Medics recommend simultaneous flu and COVID-19 vaccination
The peak of flu cases is still ahead of us. Doctors encourage vaccinations. Even doubles. – We are appealing that in the coming epidemic season, when the flu is coming, we also get vaccinated against influenza, and this can be combined with the third dose of COVID-19 – recommends the rector of the Medical University of Warsaw, Prof. Krzysztof J. Filipiak.
One visit, two pricks – this is what it would look like in practice. – With the older types of vaccines, we kept the 14-day interval. In the case of the mRNA vaccine, i.e. the vaccine that we will vaccinate as the third dose against COVID-19, it does not matter – says Prof. Krzysztof J. Filipiak.
– Most people absolutely can have the two vaccines at the same time. We vaccinate like that, we have experience in it and it is really safe. Nothing bad is happening – assures the national consultant in the field of family medicine, Dr. Agnieszka Mastalerz-Migas.
The ministry has announced the purchase of 5 million flu vaccines
Last year, just over 6 percent of the population was vaccinated against flu alone. For doctors, the matter is obvious. The contagious doctor Milena Dorosz emphasizes that thanks to vaccination “we may not get sick with a given disease, or we can get sick, but in a much milder way”. – Or we can avoid hospitalization – he adds. – This year we have doubled, and even two and a half times bigger purchases have been made – informs Minister of Health Adam Niedzielski. This year, the ministry plans to purchase 5 million flu vaccines. “That should definitely be enough,” he says. We will not get vaccinations out of hand everywhere. Sometimes the patient has to circulate between pharmacies. – Pharmacies are struggling with the temporary lack of vaccine availability in wholesalers – admits Marek Konstanty. – However, after the information that comes from the suppliers, we hope that another batch will hit the market in the next few weeks – he adds. The flu is already attacking, but the vaccination deadline has not passed. – If we did not get vaccinated in September, we did not get vaccinated in October or December, let’s get vaccinated in January, February or March – says the head of the influenza virus research department at the National Institute of Public Health, Dr. Lidia Brydak. The peak flu incidence in our country falls between January and March.
