The Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) is conducting an auction for four frequency reservations in the 3.6-3.8 gigahertz (GHz) band. The actions will allow to eliminate “white spots of the Internet” on the map of Poland, said Witold Tomaszewski, the spokesman for UKE. The Office anticipates that four large operators in Poland will participate in the auction: T-Mobile, Polkomtel, Orange Polska and P4.

At the end of June this year, an auction for four frequency reservations in the 3.6-3.8 GHz band was launched. Offers can be submitted until August 8. UKE says that the auction will last about 150 days.

Operators should be able to launch commercial networks in the band by the end of the year. UKE anticipates that all four large operators in Poland will participate in the auction: T-Mobile, Polkomtel, Orange Polska and P4.

– Actions such as these will help to eliminate “white spots of the Internet” on the map of Poland – said Witold Tomaszewski, the spokesman for UKE. As he pointed out, the auction allows each internet provider to get a maximum of 100 megahertz (MHz) from the band.

He added that the condition for receiving it is the commitment to achieve the goals set by the President of UKE. – Among them are, for example, the provision of broadband internet with a capacity of at least 95 megabits per second (Mbps) for 99 percent of households in Poland, 90 percent of Poland’s territory and 95 percent of important communication routes, i.e. national roads, provincial main railway routes. All these commitments are to be fulfilled within five years, Tomaszewski said.

The auction documentation includes communes from the following voivodeships: Dolnośląskie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Lubelskie, Łódzkie, Małopolskie, Mazowieckie, Opolskie, Podkarpackie, Podlaskie, Pomorskie, Śląskie, Świętokrzyskie, Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Wielkopolskie and Zachodniopomorskie.

As noted by the spokesman of UKE, municipalities on the eastern border of Poland are excluded from this plan due to difficulties in cooperation with our eastern neighbors in the field of infrastructure construction and international coordination of the frequencies used.

– There are not many “blank spots” in Poland, i.e. places without the coverage of any mobile network, but the coverage itself does not guarantee the possibility of using Internet access of appropriate quality – pointed out Witold Tomaszewski.

He emphasized that the main goal of the President of UKE’s activities is to improve the quality of the connection and bring broadband connections to households, so that in every corner of the country you can use the network, learn and work or enjoy entertainment remotely without any problems.

The President of the Office of Electronic Communications is a regulatory body in the field of telecommunications, postal activities and the management of frequency resources. It is also a market surveillance authority in the field of control of products that emit or are susceptible to electromagnetic field emissions, including radio devices placed on the market in the Republic of Poland.
