Raisi was born in the Shiite holy city of Mashhad Raisi in 1960. He was a Shiite scholar – ayatollah. After the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, at the age of only 20, he was appointed by the then authorities prosecutor general in Karaj near Tehran. Decades later, in 2004, he was appointed as the country's prosecutor general, and in 2019 he became the head of Iran's judiciary.

The prosecutor's position did not prevent him from being actively involved in politics. Raisi was seen as protégé of the supreme leader Iran Ali Khamenei and his potential successor.

W In 2017, he decided to run in the presidential elections against Hasan Rouhani, which he lost. Four years later, he ran for president again. At that time, however, all opponents who threatened him were excluded from running as part of the so-called Iranian verification system.

Success in the presidential elections was the beginning of Raisi's expansion of influence in Iranian politics. In the following months, ultraconservative groups supported him won the parliamentary elections.

These were the first nationwide elections since the mass protests that took place in Iran in late 2022. Demonstrators took to the streets following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman arrested by the morality police for wearing the hijab.

It was then that Raisi became known as an unapologetic supporter forceful solutions. The president supported the security services that bloodily suppressed the protests. During them, over 500 people died and nearly 22,000 were arrested.
