The authorities in Iran called to save water. Due to the lack of rainfall, the key artificial tank supplying Tehran is filled with just 7 percent. Local media say that in May Tehran will start to have problems with access to water.
Since the construction of the Karadż dam, such a situation has never occurred – said the boss of municipal waterworks quoted by the IRNA agency. Another underwater reservoir dried so much that motorcyclists organize rallies on its muddy bottom. Precipitation was the lowest in almost 60 years this winter and you can be afraid that in May Tehran will start to have problems with access to water.
Specialists say that, compared to the long -term average rainfall, they decreased by almost 50 percent. As the portal told Iran Wire Tehran “will have to face problems with drinking water from May.”

Demographic explosion
Over the past hundred years, Iran has undergone a demographic explosion. The population doubled between 1920 and 1960 (they reached 20 million), after which it increased four times – currently exceeding 90 million. However, in parallel with the increase in the population, renewable Iran's water resources dropped by about 35 percent – the Atlantic Council Think -Tank Analysts estimated last year.
The exhaustion of groundwater causes that the worst water -stocked areas are no longer possible to cultivate the land. Since 2013, about 10 million farmers abandoned farms and came to the outskirts of large cities – analysts said. The President of Iran Masud Pezeszkian has already publicly raised the issue of moving the capital to another place several times due to the inability to ensure the metropolis of sufficient water.
