How do the tense relations between the ruling camp and the European Union affect the Polish countryside? Ireneusz Niewiarowski, president of the National Association of village leaders, spoke about this in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24. – We are already suffering from this situation – he assessed. He pointed out that one of the main advantages of joining the EU was “opening markets”. He added that if Poland were to leave the European community, it would mean “the collapse of many farms, simply poverty”.
Last week, the Constitutional Tribunal chaired by Julia Przyłębska – after considering the application of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki – decided that some provisions of the Treaty on European Union were not in line with the constitution.
Vera Jourova, Vice-President of the European Commission, referring to the decision, she stated that the EU “would start to crumble” if the rules of the law were not respected throughout Europe. – That is why we will have to react to this new chapter that the Polish Constitutional Tribunal has started to open – she added.
Niewiarowski: We are already suffering from this situation
Ireneusz Niewiarowski, president of the National Association of Mayors, spoke about how the tensions between the Polish government and the European Union affect the situation in the Polish countryside in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24.
When asked what the cut of EU funds would mean for farmers, he replied that “it would be a huge loss not only for farmers, for the inhabitants of the countryside in general, for the whole country”.
– We are already suffering from this situation. There is a development measure which tells what is the percentage of investment outlays in relation to GDP. After the seizure of power (by PiS – ed.) In 2016, this percentage dropped. Last year it was 17, in the EU it is 21, investors are concerned – he continued.
– We are suffering financial losses, not to mention prestigious ones, about relations with our friends from the European Union – Niewiarowski continued.
He pointed out that the “great plus” of joining the European Union, apart from financial resources, was “the opening of markets and borders, that we are a single agricultural market”. – We would not be able to manage the production we have today, it would mean the collapse of many farms, simply poverty – he said.
Niewiarowski: PiS cannot be absolutely sure that it will win in the countryside
The TVN24 guest said that PiS “absolutely cannot be sure” that it will be winning in the countryside. He stated that PiS “won with promises”, for example that direct subsidies would be equal to EU subsidies, it was already said seven or eight years ago – he pointed out.
At the presenter’s comment that the party of Jaroslaw Kaczynski now also presents such a demand, Niewiarowski replied that “they want to win votes again in this way”. “I think you can cheat once, twice, but you can’t all the time,” he added.
