Israeli troops entered Jenin in the West Bank on Monday, where they clashed with Palestinian militants. At least ten Palestinians were killed. In response to the attack, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas suspended contacts and security coordination with Tel Aviv. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the actions of the Israeli army led to the elimination of terrorists, the arrest of wanted people and the seizure of a large amount of weapons and the destruction of laboratories producing them.

The Israeli army said that from the beginning of the operation, the Defense Forces Israel (IDF) attacked about 20 targets in Jenin and the refugee camp there. The IDF located three laboratories for the production of explosives, where approximately 300 finished charges, explosives and the means for their production were found. A rocket and parts of a submarine were seized in one of the city’s mosques, the Israeli daily Yediot Achronot reported.

The actions of the Israeli army led to the elimination of terrorists, the arrest of wanted people and the seizure of a large amount of weapons and the destruction of laboratories producing them, said the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu after the conclusion of the meeting summarizing Monday’s operation.

Also present at the meeting, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said that “anyone who wants to harm the state of Israel, its citizens and soldiers will not have a safe place – neither in Gaza nor in Nablus, and now everyone knows that neither in Jenin “.

The reaction of the Palestinian president

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has suspended contacts and security coordination with Tel Aviv over the actions of the Israeli army. The decision came after Abbas met with other Palestinian leaders. The Palestinian president has repeatedly suspended cooperation with Israel during previous episodes of escalating violence.

President Abbas’s spokesman on Monday called on the international community to “break the shameful silence and take serious action.” “The Palestinian people will not surrender or raise the white flag, but will remain steadfast on their land in the face of this brutal aggression until the occupation is defeated and freedom achieved,” he added.

There are fatalities

At least ten Palestinians were killed and dozens injured on Monday, according to IDF sources. The actual number, however, is likely higher and will increase in the coming days. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported eight dead and at least 50 injured, ten of whom are in serious condition. One of the dead is a 16-year-old boy.

The U.S. State Department said on Monday that “all possible precautions must be taken to prevent civilian deaths.” It also underlined the importance of earlier comments by White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, who said on the same day: “We support Israel’s security and the right to defend its citizens against Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and other terrorist groups.”

Spokesperson of the Secretary-General UN Antonio Guterres is watching the developments in Jenin with concern. Guterres noted that “all military operations must be conducted in full respect of international humanitarian law.”

Ending the role of Ghenin as a “terror asylum city”

A senior Israeli government official, cited by the Times of Israel, explained that the goal of this large-scale operation is to end Jenin’s role as a “terror asylum city” and stressed that the operation would continue as long as necessary. According to the official data of the Israeli authorities, as a result of the last wave of terrorist attacks over the last year (June 2022 – June 2023), 52 people lost their lives, of which 15 people died due to the attacks originating from the Jenin area.

The Jerusalem Post newspaper quoted an Israeli diplomatic source on Monday as saying that the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had informed the administration USA about two weeks ago about the planned action in Jenin, without revealing, however, when it is to take place and without giving other details.

The newspaper writes that American interlocutors showed sympathy for the plan, which the cited source compared to the US army’s fight against the Islamic State in Iraq or Syria. “Sometimes you know you can’t wait,” an Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said.

The latest episode of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is assessed by experts as the most serious in several years.
