The Israeli Minister of National Security in the new government of Benjamin Netanyahu Itamar Ben-Gewir visited the Temple Mount in Jerusalem on Tuesday, where the Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of the most important Muslim shrines in the world, is located. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry called the far-right politician’s visit an unprecedented provocation.

The photos shared by Reuters, among others, show Minister Itamar Ben-Gewir in the Al-Aqsa temple complex, escorted by security guards.

Israel’s new government “will not succumb to the threats of Hamas,” a radical Palestinian organization, Ben-Gewir said on Tuesday on the Temple Mount, quoted by the Jerusalem Post. He added that “the Temple Mount is the most important place for the Jews” due to the fact that the Jerusalem Temple was located here, and “those who make threats will be dealt with with an iron fist.”

In response to the minister’s visit, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said it “strongly condemns the intrusion into the Al-Aqsa mosque by the extremist minister Ben-Gevir and considers it an unprecedented provocation and a dangerous escalation of the conflict.”

Who is Ben-Gevir?

Imatar Ben-Gewir heads the far-right Ocma Jehudit (Jewish Force in Hebrew) party, which has entered the Religious Zionism bloc. In 2007, he was convicted of making racist statements against Arabs and supporting a group recognized by Israel and Israel United States for a terrorist organization.
