The Israel Defense Forces released four Hamas hostages on Saturday. Among them is a Polish citizen, said the Israeli ambassador in Warsaw. It was the largest rescue operation since the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip, in October 2023. An Israeli army spokesman said the action to free the four Hamas hostages was “bravado” and carried out under fire. Israeli media report that one of the special forces soldiers was seriously injured during its implementation.

Israeli soldiers carried out two simultaneous raids on Hamas facilities in central Gaza. Rescue operations were carried out as part of the ongoing operations in the al-Nusajrat area. The Gaza authorities reported on Saturday that “dozens of people” had already been killed.

The rescued hostages were Noa Argamani, Andrej Kozlov, Shlomi Ziv and Almog Meir Jan. The four were abducted by Hamas terrorists on October 7 from the Supernova music festival near the southern part of Kibbutz Re'im.

Israeli ambassador to Poland Yakov Liwne announced on social media that “one of the hostages heroically rescued from the Gaza Strip by the Israel Defense Forces is Almog Meir Jan, a citizen of Israel and Poland.”

“Our military carried out a complex, heroic operation”

The most important Israeli politicians commented on the largest hostage release operation since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023.

“I would like to commend the soldiers for a complex and courageous operation that was planned and carried out in an inspiring way,” Beni Gantz, a minister in Israel's war cabinet, said in a statement. “We will do everything to bring back the remaining hostages,” he added.

Defense Minister Joawa Gallant wrote on the X platform that “the whole nation is excited to hear about your return home.” “Our military carried out a complex, heroic operation to rescue four hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and bring them home to Israel. We will fight until the (remaining) 120 hostages return home,” he said.

Israeli hostages in the hands of Hamas

Hamas kidnapped about 250 people during the October attack. Nearly half were released as part of a week-long ceasefire in November.

Israel says more than 130 hostages remain in terrorists' hands, with about a quarter of them presumed dead. Protests are regularly organized in the country calling on the government to increase its efforts to release detained people.
