The Israeli government approved on Monday the construction of 5,700 additional housing units for Jewish settlers in the West Bank, Reuters reported. The leadership of the Jewish settlers applauded the decision.

The Reuters agency reminds that most countries consider settlements built on land occupied by Israel during the Middle East War in 1967 as illegal. Their presence is one of the fundamental issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Palestinians seek to establish an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital. Israeli settlers, on the other hand, cite Jewish historical ties to the land.

The authorities are pressing for the suspension of Israeli settlements in Palestinian lands USAwhich see them as an obstacle to Israel’s lasting peace with the Palestinians. A few days ago also the secretary general UN Antonio Guterres called on Israel to stop and reverse the decision to expand Jewish settlements.
