Palestinian Islamic Jihad member Khader Adnan has died in an Israeli prison after 87 days of hunger strike. The incident led to a new escalation of violence. Following retaliatory attacks on the Gaza Strip, Israel and Palestinian armed groups in the Gaza Strip agreed to a ceasefire in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Reuters reported, citing Palestinian authorities.
Defense Forces Israel said they had carried out airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in response to rockets fired by Palestinian militants into Israel during the day. A total of 37 rockets were fired into southern Israel on Tuesday, the Times of Israel reported. As a result of shelling from the Gaza Strip, 12 civilians were injured.
Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad took responsibility for the attack.
Escalation of violence after the death of the Palestinian leader
Israeli Defense Minister Joav Galant, who met with Chief of the General Staff General Herci Halevi at noon, declared: “Anyone who tries to harm Israeli citizens will regret it.”

Israel and Palestinian armed groups in the Gaza Strip agreed to a ceasefire early Wednesday morning, Reuters reported, citing Palestinian authorities.
The mutual and simultaneous ceasefire went into effect at 3:30 am local time (4:30 am PT) and was achieved through the efforts of EgyptQatar and UN sources told Reuters. There has been a noticeable slowdown in Israeli military activity since 4 a.m. local time, the Haaretz daily website reported, citing Palestinian sources.
