During a meeting with CIA chief William Burns, Israeli Mossad chief David Barnea tried to discredit the new Iranian president. He portrayed Ebrahim Raisi as “extremely extremist, cruel, corrupt and unstable,” the Israeli media reported. Israel is firmly against a return to a nuclear deal with Iran.
David Barnea and William Burns met Tuesday night to discuss the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. They also discussed other issues on which the CIA and Mossad plan to cooperate in the region.
Raisi is “untrustworthy”
At an earlier meeting, Barnea was said to have tried to prove to Burns that Raisi was untrustworthy and incapable of negotiating a new nuclear deal or keeping his commitments, Israeli TV Channel 12 reported on Tuesday.
According to reports from this station, Barnea handed Burns a file on Raisi which portrayed him as “extremely extremist, cruel, corrupt and unstable.”
Since April, Iran and world powers have been negotiating a return to the nuclear deal, from which the then President Donald Trump withdrew the United States in 2018. The sixth round of talks took place on June 20, and Iranian and Western negotiators assessed that important issues still remain to be resolved. Since 2019, Iran has been violating restrictions on uranium enrichment, which is a possible route to nuclear weapons.
Israel is strongly opposed to a return to an agreement with Iran.
