it is an industry and a contemporary enclave of eugenics

On Thursday, the Sejm held a debate on the citizens’ bill on in vitro reimbursement. Half a million people signed the project, but Law and Justice does not notice this and criticizes the idea. Meanwhile, in the ranking of the availability of infertility treatment, Poland is third from the bottom in Europe – ahead only of Armenia and Albania, and in the European Union we are the only country without reimbursement or a plan to introduce it.

False hope was had by those who hoped that the act on the reimbursement of the in vitro method would unite deputies of all options in the Sejm. Nothing could be more wrong, because the members of the Civic Platform and Law and Justice party had completely different views. During the parliamentary debate, Agnieszka Pomaska argued that in vitro fertilization is the most effective treatment for infertility, and Elżbieta Płonka claimed the opposite. – We are dealing with the in vitro industry adopting the form of a modern enclave of eugenics – said the MP.

The parliamentary debate is the result of half a year of collecting signatures for the civic project “YES for in vitro”. Only a 4-point act provides for the introduction of reimbursement by the state of infertility treatment using the in vitro method and the allocation of PLN 500 million for this purpose each year. – How much new happiness can we have in Poland, if we spend the 500 million zlotys in this way – pointed out MP Pomaska.

500,000 people signed the civic project, but PiS offends both them and children born thanks to the method. – A child is treated in a blatantly objective way on the basis of a good or product, and not a full-fledged person – said MP Płonka.

The statement of the PiS MP during the debate was criticized, among others, by Dariusz Klimczak, MP from the PSL. – If the author of the book “Dark Middle Ages” were alive, he would certainly write the next part based on your statement – said the politician.

Call for the adoption of the law

IVF refund is supported by 66 percent of Poles, and the entire democratic opposition in the Sejm. PiS will not impose discipline on its deputies, but it was them who appealed to adopt the bill by one of the originators of the bill. – A welfare state, a social state should never leave its citizens without assistance from the state budget – said Małgorzata Rozenek-Majdan.

Only conservative data say that infertility affects three million people in Poland. Karolina and her husband succeeded – they have a daughter thanks to the in vitro method, but only because they could afford it.

– I cried with happiness, jumped, went crazy and was happy when I saw the result of beta-hCG on the TV screen for the first time in my life, and I saw that I was finally pregnant for the first time in my life, thanks to the in vitro procedure – recalls Mrs. Karolina Klimowicz.

Poland against the background of Europe

It is estimated that over 100,000 children have already been born thanks to the in vitro method in Poland, but still in the ranking of the availability of infertility treatment, Poland is third from the end in Europe – ahead only of Armenia and Albania. In the European Union, we are the only country without a refund or a plan to introduce it.

– Do you know what this philosophy of action is called? Ignorance – Aleksandra Gajewska, an MP from the Civic Coalition, commented during the parliamentary debate.

Under the PO, the state reimbursed IVF for three years, but the PiS government threw the program into the trash, replacing it with ineffective naprotechnology promoted by the Church.

Doctors, however, have no doubts about the effectiveness of in vitro. – It is the most advanced – according to today’s knowledge – method of treating infertility – emphasizes Jan Lewandowski, specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, deputy director of the “Novum” medical clinic.

– We have contact with couples who do not even start treatment, who do not even go to the infertility clinic for the first visit, because they know that they simply cannot afford this treatment – points out Marta Górna from the Association for Infertility Treatment and Adoption Support Our Stork. This is to be changed by the Citizenship Act. The project went to the commission, but whether it will not get stuck in it now depends on PiS.
